Nutrition for Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes
Nutrition Balance provides medical nutrition therapy for diabetes and pre-diabetes in West Hartford Center — one-on-one with Romely Ritoli, R.D., CD-N, in person or by telehealth, with fees reimbursed by several health plans. Care covers Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes, plus pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypoglycemia and PCOS.
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which afflicts about 16 million people in the United States. Approximately half of those with diabetes are unaware they have the disease. It is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated glucose (blood sugar), resulting from defects in secretion of the hormone insulin, defects which cause tissue to resist absorption of insulin, or possibly both.
Chronic elevation of blood sugar is associated with long-term damage to the eyes, feet, gums and teeth, heart, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels. The four main ways to take care of diabetes are: eat healthy food, get regular exercise, take your diabetes medicine, and test your blood sugar.

Why do people with diabetes need their own eating plan?
People with diabetes should have their own eating plan. Diabetes is a complex and dangerous disease. Although there is no cure for diabetes, it can be controlled. People with diabetes are more likely to develop cardiovascular complications, which includes heart and blood vessels.
